Art / Tokyo, Japan

Experience Level

Must have professional experience as a Technical Artist on shipped titles

Must have shipped at least one game

About the Role

As a Technical Artist at Savage Astronaut, you will help define how our game is built at a fundamental level. You’ll work at the intersection of art and engineering, creating the tools, shaders, and pipelines that enable a grounded, anime-inspired visual style to scale in a competitive multiplayer environment.

This role is both creative and technical. You’ll translate art direction into real-time solutions, solving aesthetic challenges through systems, while ensuring performance, clarity, and consistency in-game.

You will work closely with artists, designers, and engineers to build workflows that are efficient, flexible, and aligned with the needs of a fast-moving team.

You Will

  • Build and maintain tools and workflows that empower artists to create content efficiently

  • Develop shaders and materials that support a grounded, cel-shaded anime art direction

  • Translate visual targets into real-time rendering solutions within engine constraints

  • Optimize assets, materials, and scenes for performance, especially in multiplayer scenarios

  • Support and improve lighting and rendering pipelines

  • Identify pipeline bottlenecks and solve cross-discipline production challenges

  • Collaborate closely with art, design, and engineering to align technical solutions with creative goals

We’re Looking For Someone Who

  • Is comfortable working within a defined art direction, and excited to push a grounded anime aesthetic forward

  • Enjoys solving aesthetic problems through technical solutions

  • Has strong knowledge of shaders, materials, and real-time rendering

  • Understands performance constraints, especially in multiplayer environments

  • Thinks in systems and workflows, not just one-off solutions

  • Brings ideas and technical vision to improve pipelines and processes

  • Can clearly communicate complex technical concepts to artists and other disciplines

  • Is proactive, communicative, and comfortable taking ownership

Bonus Points

  • Experience working on stylized rendering pipelines, especially anime-inspired visuals

  • Experience on PvP or competitive multiplayer titles

  • Experience building tools or pipelines in Unreal Engine (Blueprints, Python, or C++)

  • Familiarity with lighting workflows and scene optimization

  • Experience with DCC tools such as Maya, Blender, Houdini, or Substance

  • Portfolio (must include technical art work and process)

  • Tools, pipelines, or systems you built or maintained

  • Engines and technologies you have used, and how you used them

  • Any scripting or programming experience relevant to your work

  • Examples of cross-discipline collaboration (art, design, engineering)

Please also include (if available):

  • Tool demos, shader breakdowns, or technical documentation

  • Visual before/after comparisons showing impact of your work
